Rep. Ahn Cheol-soo, co-chief of the main opposition New Politics Alliance for Democracy (NPAD), said in his first speech to the parliament as the party leader that another inter-Korean summit will need to be held with support and sympathy of the people, urging Park to push for the third after summits held in 2000 and 2007.

Ahn said reunification of the two Koreas should be pursued under the principle that it is a process, not a one-off event, welcoming the three-point proposal to the DPRK made by Park in Dresden, Germany on March 28.

Park promised a support for pregnant women and babies in the DPRK through the United Nations, infrastructure development and natural resources exploration as well as broader inter-Korean exchanges in history, culture and sports.

Ahn said the main opposition party will support Park's efforts to reconcile with Pyongyang and actively cooperate with the government for it, offering to form a group of special envoys, if necessary, comprised of the rival parties' lawmakers.

The NPAD was launched in March as Ahn, former independent lawmaker, agreed on the launch with Kim Han-gil, former main opposition Democratic Party head and current co-leader of the NPAD.

Ahn, who ran for the 2012 presidential election as an independent candidate, dropped out of the race to support Democratic Party candidate Moon Jae-in, who was defeated by ruling Saenuri Party candidate Park Geun-hye by a narrow margin.

Ahn's comments came amid growing tensions on the Korean Peninsula. The DPRK fired short- and medium-range missiles in the past weeks, including the Rodong missile that can fly as far as 1, 300 km carrying nuclear warhead.
